title: Legacy Ping
description: "Handshake 0xFE, client → server."
---

`handshake` · `0xFE` · **serverbound** (client → server)

Legacy server list ping used by clients older than 1.7. It is identified by the raw `0xFE` first byte instead of a normal framed packet. A modern server may answer with a legacy kick-style status string or simply close the connection.

Sent by the client, read by the server. Listen for it with `client.on("LegacyPing", (data) => …)` on the receiving side.

## Fields

| Field | Type | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| `payload` | UByte | also `data` |

## Send it

```ts
// Client side, while the connection is still in the handshake state.
await client.sendPacket("LegacyPing", {
  payload: 0x01, // extended server-list ping used by Minecraft 1.4–1.6
});
```

Use `0x01` for the extended legacy ping variant. The server may answer with a legacy kick-style status string or close the connection; no modern status handshake is sent first.

Field aliases listed under Notes are accepted as alternative keys when writing.
